Halloween

Halloween

A happy Halloween to all of our loyal customers! Halloween, or Samhain, is a day of scares and connection to the dead. There are many flowers that can represent this spooky season, including marigolds, chrysanthemums, black roses, snapdragons, and spider lilies.

Marigolds are both a staple Halloween flower and the birth flower for October children. They represent the connection between the world of the living and the land of the dead. Marigolds are typically used to honor the dead, and can be seen adorning many gravestones at this time of year. Marigolds are also used in many Día de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead – celebrations, due to the belief that their bright color can attract spirits.

Chrysanthemums can symbolize death. They are often used for graves and funerals – particularly in their classic white color – in many cultures. Chrysanthemums are able to withstand the colder autumn temperatures, which gives them meanings of resilience in the face of loss.

Black roses are a typical Halloween flower that represents mystery, mourning, and darkness. The unnatural color of black roses gives them an ominous feeling perfect for the Halloween season. Black roses are often featured in literature – including the poems of Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorn’s novel The Scarlet Letter. Black roses also feature in various songs and movies – particularly in gothic horrors such as vampire films.
